  • Hey folks, thanks for all the ideas of inspiration for the Final Word last week – I wrote one today (for Monday) based on one of those suggestions and will work through the other ones in the coming weeks!

It’s one What I Wish I Knew… so a series of anecdotes, experiences and advice based on all the mistakes I made when I started out. I kept…

  • If you’re not yet on Substack, you might want to reconsider. Phoebe Morgan (Publishing Director at Hodder & Stoughton) shares her thoughts and experience in a weekly stack called The Honest Editor. And this week, she interviews Tom, who runs my incredible local bookshop. Boil the kettle / pour a drink. Settle back and read this, then subscribe…

  • This was a nice way to wake up today! ❤️

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there. Always bitter sweet as I don’t speak to or know my own dad anymore, but lucky and grateful to have amazing kids.

  • Hey folks, I need your help!

I’m currently going through one of my worst creative spells ever, and I feel like (probably not true!) I’ve exhausted all my inspiration or advice in terms of the Final Word on the weekly newsletter.

I know the 2 are inextricably linked.

Usually hope with the newsletter is to have inspiration go from the newsletter…

  • Why do our AI overlords hate me? Having previously had my old Instagram account deleted days before my book launch, this morning they’ve suspended my Threads account (but not Insta, yet…) for “violating community guidelines”. Needless to say, I’ve done nothing of that sort!! Filled in an appeal form. Clicked “Send” but no confirmation it…

  • Playing in the sand box today with a hopefully funny grown up novel and a new idea for an MG. I love this stage, seeing which idea has legs, probably the idea that won’t leave me alone and demands to be written!

  • Just realised the time, didn’t put my timer on. Great sprint this morning, have the first draft of a picture book ready to send to my crit group. Thank you for the accountability. Have a great day everyone.

  • Hello all! Can anyone help? I’m seeking an author to make an online appearance and/or short video for Year 2 children (age 6-7)…

The bad news – it’s unpaid. I have no control over this, sadly.

The school where I work (a British Curriculum school in Dubai) has asked me for author suggestions for this time of year in 2026. We usually have a…

  • Hi!

For some reason I can’t access any other groups or anyone’s post any more. Is this a wider problem with site at the mo?

    thanks!

    • Hi Sarah! System sometimes does that – I’ve re-added you to hub members so just go ahead and request access to any groups you want from sub groups and I’ll let you in, sorry about that!

  • A question for unpublished, unagented writers – have you created your own website?

I have the online presence of a hermit crab and am wondering whether creating my own website is one of the many things I should be doing if I want agents to take me seriously as a writer. Any thoughts welcome.

    • Hi Wendy, I don’t have an agent at the moment, but have had in the past, and I do have a trad publishing deal. In my experience a website is not something an agent will particularly be looking for but might be a nice bonus, especially if it has original content related to what you’re writing about. Maybe have a look at published authors in…

    • Hi Wendy, I think if you want one, there’s no harm in it. But it’s not a ‘should’ – don’t feel you have to have one if it’s not in your comfort zone. Same as being on SM – it’s not essential.

I am agented but unpublished, and I don’t have a website yet.
