@nikki-spalding When has a writer ever been paid £50 a word! Maybe like a dozen writers in history with massive selling books???

Hopefully they have measures in place to stop those with big follows utilising that to garner the most votes!
Good luck to them but they need 5000 entries just to break even on the £75000 and that’s not taking into account VAT and transaction fees – that probably adds at least another 1000 so really 6000 needed. Then they need to pay their judges etc, so more like 6500 entries! How do they properly read all of those?
From the POV of someone who runs these things regularly and makes sure every entry is read properly etc, this feels much more like buying a lottery ticket than entering an award…not that our awards are perfect by any means, nor am I suggesting that not all entries will be given proper consideration but I just can’t imagine the logistics of it. We got 1300 entries one year and it was the worst 3 months of my life trying to manage that award!
Also check out the official rules at the bottom for a laugh!

My immediate thought was it’s too good to be true. Second thought was..if I don’t understand the T&Cs I probably shouldn’t be entering.

@undefined Yes need to study those T&C carefully – there was an award once, not running anymore, that the terms said that they (the publisher) gained the rights to your book idea if you won the competition!
ie you couldn’t write that idea into a full novel and submit it elsewhere – crazy rights grab and very predatory! Always keep your rights!

I don’t have anything solid on this except whispers and other writers feeling off about the low page numbers for entering and the prize money, but some are saying they might be farming for IP content, and won’t be surprised if the person who wins isn’t a complete unknown to them. So…tread carefully.

Novelry also allegedly takes down bad reviews of them from reddit and other sites. Allegedly.

?@Carrie Stewart? Thanks for this, Carrie! Always good to know and at least if people decide to go for it, they do so with that warning in their mind.
