Meet the WriteMentor team: Emily Randall-Jones, Events Co-ordinator
What’s your role at WriteMentor?
Events Co-ordinator and fangirling during Q&As.
What do you love most about working at WriteMentor?
I love the community – it’s such an supportive empathetic atmosphere – everybody wants success for everyone, not just themselves, and that ethos of kindness is everywhere in WM. It’s rare and special.
What’s your favourite thing that WriteMentor offers writers?
I’m biased obviously but I think the WriteMentor Hub Q&As. We’ve had such a caliber of guests, from Carnegie winning authors to editors and agents from the biggest publishers and agencies in the UK. It can be a very opaque industry and this gives us a rare glimpse behind the curtainÂ
What are you reading right now?
Seed by Caryl Lewis and Shiver Point by Gabriel Dylan. Both excellent and very different!
What are you writing right now?
Can’t say too much, but I’m currently editing my second book – another creepy, gothic mystery.Â
What do you love doing when you’re not writing?
As a single Mum, I don’t have loads of time when not writing – as I’m mainly child wrangling! But I’m getting better at trying to remember self care etc etc…long walks, folk music, making potions out of stuff we find on our adventures…and I live in a beautiful little town, where there’s always something new to explore.
What’s your one piece of writing advice?
Go gentle on yourself. Perfectionism, self-criticism and comparisons are all thieves of creativity. Follow your own lead, and stop thinking you’re a failure for not reaching a certain bar you’ve set yourself. Start to accept you’re doing your best, and your writing (and your mood) will start to improve.
