What goes into selling a book to foreign publishers

I am the head of the children’s and YA books department at PFD, where I manage my own list of clients alongside selling foreign and audio rights in our children’s and YA titles.
The foreign rights side of the business is an incredibly interesting and important part of my job. It requires specific knowledge of both the books you’re selling and the foreign markets that you’re selling into, which is why it needs an expert eye and a specific set of skills. You need to be able to agent the book like a primary agent would, championing it with passion and a keen editorial eye, but you also need to have a lot of contacts across different countries, and know trends and rules that each foreign markets abides to, as well as of course be able to negotiate the best terms for your clients in specific territories.
