Workshop details:

SAT AM: Workshop One: SARAH: How to find a unique voice

Agents often say they’re looking for a unique voice, but what does that mean? We’ll look at some examples in first and third person, and try creating our own.

SAT PM: Workshop Two: SARAH: How to plot a novel

Bring your story idea together with this session on plotting. We’ll look at a couple of tried-and-tested plotting techniques and put them into action by creating a group-book.

BONUS Workshop: SARAH: How to write a query letter

You’ll be given a simple template that will give agents all the information they need on a single page. If there’s time, Sarah will also look over these and give you tailored feedback in the break.
SAT PM 1-2-1s: with PFD literary agent Lucy Irvine

SUN AM: Workshop Three: KATYA: Poetry in prose – writing lyrically for young people.

Making your writing stand out, creating unique imagery and distinctive prose. We’ll read poems, try writing our own short ‘in the style of’ and put these skills into action writing prose.

SUN PM: Workshop Four: KATYA: Character – from 2D to 3D.

Exercises to develop your characters from words on a page to real people! You’ll each create a unique character, share and feed back in the group, and use them in a piece of short fiction. If you’re feeling brave, you can choose for your character to interact with someone else’s. There will be lots of sharing, discussion and development.
BONUS Workshop: KATYA: The dreaded synopsis!
Everyone hates these, but we’ll use templates and examples to distill complex storylines into one-page summaries.

Inclusive of the following:

  • Sweets, water, fruit and stationery
  • Unlimited Tea & Coffee all day with a morning and afternoon snack
  • Restaurant Lunch.

She began her new role in June 2019.

What I’m looking for…

I am actively building my own list, and am looking particularly for commercial Middle Grade and YA – both fiction and non-fiction – along with picture books, illustrated fiction for younger readers, and graphic novels.

I am drawn to narratives driven by world building; quick-paced, addictive, and adventurous, with returnable series potential. I love stories set in worlds that pull you in and stay with you long after you’ve finished reading. I’m particularly keen on fantasy, sci-fi, and speculative fiction, and in these genres will read submissions aimed at all ages. Genre aside, my taste is incredibly varied, so if you have a fresh voice and a strong narrative then I would love to read it!
