SAT AM: Always show the reader what the kids are having to eat – a recap on some writing for children fundamentals. We’ll take time out to stop and ask are we writing a marketable book that meets reader and industry expectations: covering key elements of craft, book categories and child developmental stages, and demystifying the term high concept.
SAT PM: It’s my fictional world and I’ll cry if I want to! World building and setting without the tears. Well, with less tears.
SUN AM: What Captain America taught me about voice – stand out characters and snazzy dialogue. Perfecting voice and dialogue with reference to the Marvel Avengers and Myers Briggs personality types – no advanced Avengers knowledge required!
SUN PM: So you think you’ve finished your novel? A redrafting and editing know how covering some of the key considerations when getting your novel submission ready.

When Marie Basting was fifteen, she was told by a careers advisor that girls like her don’t become writers. For a long time, she believed this. But then something magical happened and Marie finally came to realise that girls like her can do anything they want. Princess BMX is her debut novel.
As Assistant Regional Advisor for the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, Marie supports the development of writers and illustrators at all stages of their careers. A former learning and development manager, she has extensive experience of providing workshops and support for writers, regularly delivering outreach support for the Portico and Manchester Metropolitan University, where she works as an Associate Lecturer. A trained coach and mentor, Marie has an MA in Creative Writing and a Level 7 certificate in Action Learning.
Jon Mayhew is the author of the multi-award winning Mortlock and Monster Odyssey series published by Bloomsbury. His books have won the Warwick, Sefton, Wirral, Leeds and Calderdale Prizes as well as being shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book of the Year. Jon’s retellings of Shakespeare for Collins are popular KS2 classroom staples as is his Myth-Maker Kit for OUP. This means Jon is in demand on the school event circuit, delivering inspiring talks and workshops to students, from KS2 to Sixth Form, both nationally and internationally. On the sly, Jon writes sweary adult Urban Fantasy under the name of Edwin Torr. He has been a mentor at the legendary Swanwick Writing School and is a Royal Literary Fund Writing Fellow, helping students improve their academic writing at the University of Chester. Jon’s book for writing students and aspiring writers, Storycraft, comes out in August 2019.
