Gabrielle Kent | Creating characters and subverting unconscious bias

This session will look at methods of developing characters with depth, from protagonists and antagonists to secondary characters, as well as looking at subverting readers expectations and your own subconscious bias.

Gabrielle has worked on video-games, taught students how to make videogames, ran a festival about videogames, and written a series of books based on videogames. She REALLY likes videogames, almost as much as she loves reading and writing stories, especially ones with magic in them.

She has always been slightly obsessed with exploring castles and in 2006 she visited Castle Coch in Wales. As she looked at a carving of The Fates over one of the fireplaces they whispered an idea for a story to her. When she got home she started typing the story of Alfie Bloom, the boy who inherited a castle full of magic and mystery. She has now written three books in the series.

Recently, her experience of childhood in the eighties came together with her love of writing and videogames when she was asked to write a series of novels based on the characters and world from the videogame, Knights and Bikes, soon to be an animated TV series.

She currently lives in the North East of England with her husband, daughter, and Bengal cat, Kali - Destroyer of Sofas.
