4 workshops, 1-2-1s, hours of free writing time and all-inclusive lunch, snacks and drinks from 9-5pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Workshop details:

SAT AM: Workshop One: Creating the Character
We will discuss the importance of creating a strong character through some initial examination of existing examples. We will do some exercises to help us with our own character development. Further analysis of our ideas will allow us to strengthen our characters and make them ‘story ready’.

SAT PM: Workshop Two: Developing the Idea
Once we know who our characters are, we need to look at developing the story idea. We will work on creating a solid synopsis and start exploring story structure for a young target audience. We will look at how to pace of a story and how to introduce the climax and resolution.

SUN AM: Workshop Three: STORY STRUCTURE – HIT THE GROUND RUNNING, INCITING INCIDENT, TROUGH OF HELL, STORY CLIMAX, RESOLUTION, HUMOUR and WHY IT HAS A PLACE IN ALL WRITING

SUN PM: Workshop Four: EDITING LIKE A BADASS

BONUS: SUBMISSION TIPS – How to bag yourself an agent

SUN PM: 1-2-1s: Gabrielle Kent

Workshop Leader/Guest:

Jenny is represented by Sam Copeland at RCW. Her debut middle grade book, The Super Miraculous Journey of Freddie Yates, will be published by Usborne in 2020.


Holly is a a freelance children’s author and illustrator based in the North East of England. She loves to work by hand using a variety of different media including watercolour, pencil and different printing processes.

In 2009, Holly graduated from the University of Sunderland with a First Class Honors Degree in Illustration and Design. After graduating, Holly worked at design company, Big Bang Creative in Teesside creating designs for websites, e-commerce, branding and games.

In 2011 Holly decided to go back to university, to do a two year Masters at Edinburgh College of Art. She graduated with a Master of Fine Art (MFA) with Distinction in 2013. In the same year she was highly Commended for the Macmillan Illustration Prize and the winner of the Seven Stories/Frances Lincoln Illustration Competition.

After Holly completed her Masters Degree, she worked at a greeting card company in the North East of England designing greeting cards for charities such as Macmillan Cancer Support, PDSA, RSPB, Epilepsy Action, Sue Ryder and Traidcraft. After a year in the industry, Holly decided to make writing and illustrating picture books a full-time commitment.

Holly now teaches Illustration and Design at Sunderland University alongside her illustration work. Her publishers include Walker Books, Scholastic, Quarto Kids, Egmont and QED Publishing.


Gabrielle is the author of the Knights and Bikes book series based on the game by FoamSword, published by Double Fine Presents, as well as the Alfie Bloom series, which has been published in eight languages. She is currently working on a YA novel as well as a fun new series, Mina and Nani, following the adventures of a British born Mauritian girl and her grandmother as they solve mysteries together.

During her career Gabrielle has worked on console and PC games for Accolade, Infogrammes and Atari and lectured in Game Development at Teesside University where she ran the Animex Festival. She has been voted one of the Top 100 most Influential Women in the games industry four times, received a Woman of the Year Ambassador Award from MCV magazine, and has served as a judge on the Games BAFTA awards on many occasions.

One of her favourite experiences was being recruited by the BBC as a games expert to help Peter Capaldi’s Doctor Who to save the world from the Daleks using programming.
