I write and more about #writementor)

Agent: Yasmin Standen

Published books: Currently on Submission with The Unadjusteds, a YA genetic thriller where the power of Heros meets the pace of Divergent.

Genre: MG/YA

Bio: I have been writing for over 10 years and have now penned 15 novels. I am on my second agent so I’ve been around the block a couple of times and know the pitfalls of the submission process, and that having an agent doesn’t always equal publishing deal. I am out on sub at the moment with my YA sci-fi entitled The Unadjusteds. I have long and short listed in a number of comps and have completed several writing courses: Curtis Brown Creative, Arron Sorkin Master Class, all of WHQ’s courses, Writer’s Bureau. An avid member of the writing community on Twitter and Facebook I feel meeting other writers in their journey has helped my craft grow.

Experience: I have completed a Writer’s Bureau novel and short story writing course, Curtis Brown’s acclaimed three-month novel writing course for children (London), Aaron Sorkin’s online master class for screen writing, and Writers HQ Plotstormers 1 plotting course and Plotstormers 2 editing course. Plus the Writers HQ Characterisation master class and short fiction courses. I have been short listed for both #peerpitch1 & 2 (2017) competitions, and shortlisted for #1st50, and longlisted for the #peerpitch Q1 2018 competition. I have been longlisted for Adventures in Fiction New Voices Competition and Flash 500 Novel Opening Competition. I am a member of SCWBI and have completed a mentorship at the Golden Egg Academy with Matilda Johnson. I hold a BSc in psychology. I have written 15 novels. 1 MG, 2 adult and the rest YA.

Mentoring style: As a mentor, I will be using track changes in Word. I’ll also give you a detailed report of my impressions. Although I can’t commit to a full manuscript review this time around, I will absolutely give you plot points to think about and areas for development. I’m really good at compliments when I see good stuff too! I can help you with your elevator pitch (Essential for queries, especially in America) and I’ve got a few formulas for knocking out that synopsis. I’ll will be your champion and advocate and root for you all the way! I’m happy to email, Skype and exchange twitter gifs (The more absurd the better). So, If I sound like a good fit for you, send me all your dark and twisty words! Please look at the Write Mentor section of my website for more stuff about me and what I like.

Mentee style: someone who is open to ideas and change and not afraid of hard work. All of our book babies are precious, but I’m hoping to find someone amenable to discussion and making changes. Of course. It’s just my opinion, and all opinions are subjective, but I’d love to help my mentee get it right, especially after they can’t bare to look at their MS anymore and who is hungry for new ideas. You are absolutely allowed to disagree with me!

What kind of novel would you like to work on? I would like to mentor anything dark and twisty. Murder, thrillers, urban fantasy, sci-fi, paranormal (vampires are still cool IMO). Although contemporary isn’t my favourite area, I am very interested in mental health. YA is my comfort zone but I will consider MG if the voice really grabs me. High fantasy isn’t my fav either, but I won’t rule it out if I can understand the world well enough.

Favourite novels: Hunger Games, Twilight, anything by Dean Koontz, The Homecoming of Samuel Lake, The Dark Materials Trilogy,

Mentoring package offered: Query package (synopsis, query letter, 1st 3 chapters) or up to the first 20k of manuscript
