Genre: YA: fantasy, magical realism, or contemporary
Bio: Jodi Herlick lives in Saint Paul, Minnesota with her amazing husband, her two imaginative children, and two cats. She holds an MFA in creative writing from National University and teaches at North Central University. Her short fiction has been published in The Quotable and The Gateway Review.
Experience: I have an MFA in creative writing, which gave me plenty of experience in critiquing the works of others, in addition to enhancing my understanding of craft. I’ve written four complete manuscripts—although I try not to mention the first two monstrosities. I’ve also taught classes on fiction writing and grammar, and I’ve served as a critique partner for fellow YA writers on a regular basis.
Mentoring style: My mentoring style is honest but kind. I’ll provide plenty of in-text comments as well as an overall edit letter, and I’m happy to chat and/or brainstorm ideas via email, direct message, or Skype. My goal would be to begin with developmental edits and then, once those are complete, do a round of line edits. Line editing is my favorite part of revising, so if your manuscript is in need of a bit of polishing, I’m happy to help with that.
Mentee style: I’m looking for a mentee who is open to feedback, is willing to work hard to meet deadlines, and who has a sense of humor.
What I’d like to see in a novel? My first love is YA fantasy although I also love magical realism. I prefer contemporary settings or exotic/unusual settings over generic LOTR-like settings. I’m a sucker for lyrical writing, interesting characters, and books that use fantastic elements to explore societal issues. I’m also open to YA contemporary if it can make me both laugh and cry and has characters who grab me.
Favourite novels: Uprooted, Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Raven Boys, Bone Gap, Pride and Prejudice
Mentoring package offered: Full manuscript and redrafts until submission ready
