Genre: SciFi for YA readers (of all ages)
Bio: I’m a graduate of the well-regarded Bath Spa MA in Writing For Young People and just before graduation I secured a publication deal with Egmont UK for a SciFi trilogy intended for YA readers (of all ages!). ‘The Sign Of One’ is the first book in the trilogy and was shortlisted for the AM Heath Irish Children’s Prize in 2013 and the Bath Novel Award in 2014. The final volume, ‘The Long Forever’ will be published in June 2018.
Mentoring style: I can do Skype sessions, telephone, email and even meetings if mentee is local.
Mentee style: What do I want in in a mentee? Enthusiasm. Sense of humour. Willingness to take constructive criticism …
What kind of novel would you like to work on? In terms of what I’d like to see in a manuscript … it has first and foremost to grab and intrigue the reader. I’d also be looking for good confident writing and storytelling, distinct character voices and solid world building; all this demonstrates that the writer has read other books critically and understands what makes them fun to read. At the end of the day though, it’s a cracking story that counts …
Favourite novels: More recently, I was inspired by Patrick Ness’s Chaos Walking trilogy, Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, and Moira Young’s Blood Red Road. Anything by Alan Garner. A lifetime favourite would be the Lord Of The Rings!
Mentoring package offered: Query package (synopsis, query letter, 1st 3 chapters)
